Thursday Thoughts // It bears repeating: change is hard
They say that “a journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step.” And that if it wasn’t hard, everybody’d do it.
A while back, I had made up my mind that I was going to start a coaching practice. But I had a small problem: I wouldn’t actually tell anyone I was a Coach.
Because verbalizing would make it real. And if it was real, I’d actually have to do something about it.
The first step isn’t just a step. It’s a commitment, implicit or explicit, to not just start, but to keep going.
On a comedy podcast, of all things, I heard someone say: “If you keep finding reasons not to do something, you won’t end up doing anything.” That’s the insidious nature of the Fear of Change: it always has a convenient excuse to remedy your ambitions.
When I finally started telling people I was a Career Coach, I accidentally ended up with my first client before I had a company name, before I had a website, before I even knew what I was doing.
What excuses do you give yourself to justify staying where you are?
