On Tuesday, I wrote about the ambition dial — how ambitious do you actually want to be?
I teed it up that way on purpose, because it’s the rare question you can’t answer by saying “yes, and.” You don’t get anywhere by accepting the premise and piling more on top. It isn’t a question of how much. It’s a question of how you calibrate your work against everything else asking for your time, talent, and treasure.
Calibration, not volume.
Because the dial isn’t stuck on “more.” And it isn’t the only dial in the room.
Turn work all the way up, and something else quietly gets turned down to make room. Family. Health. Sleep. The parts of you that have nothing to do with a job and never wanted one. That’s not a failure of discipline. It’s the trade — the one most people never name out loud, even to themselves.
Recalibration is naming it. Deciding, on purpose, how much of your time, talent, and treasure work gets — and, just as important, what you’re keeping out of its reach.
Not less ambition. Not more. The same energy, aimed on purpose.
So here’s the question I’d sit with this week:
Where’s your dial set right now — and did you set it, or did it just drift there?
